The study of the communal goods of the Clusone community through historical documentation has enabled us to bring to light the close relationship that in ancient times people established with the landscape surrounding them.
The way of deciding rules and practices through a process of self-organization shows a concept of territorial protection that in the ancien régime, unlike today, was produced by the community itself, and which we might define as “from the grassroots.” In this sense, a universal and abstract model was avoided: the specificity of the statutes, the manifestation of a particular right with respect to a limited territorial area, represented the purpose of regulating the most concrete aspects of the communities’ needs.
